Waterloo Times, An Italian Restaurant Among the Bugis HDB (Closed)

Waterloo Times from the name sounded like some UK newspaper but it is actually an Italian Restaurant in Bugis area located in the ground floor of a HDB block of flat. For those who are not familiar with Singapore, HDB stands for Housing Development Board, a government agency catering to the building of homes which basically are known as flat for Singaporean at a more affordable price.

I was meeting my aunt for lunch and at the same time to settle some outstanding tasks with her so after some googling on the internet, I found Waterloo Times.

Waterloo Times - Restaurant Interior

It is pretty easy to find the place. The restaurant has a simple and sleek design. The colours tone used in the restaurant was warm tone, make up of orange and red. Nothing fanciful, just a few pictures of map hung on the wall.

The menu is also pretty simple. There are appetizers, soup, mains, pasta, pizza, sides, desserts and beverages. Each category, there are a handful choices. Waterloo Times serves some daily special and set lunch too. These were found on the wall. So beside looking at the menu, do look at the walls too.

We did not order the day special but the standard menu items. For the items were for sharing. We have the Salad of Saute Garlic Prawns with Sambal Oleh Cherry Tomatoes and Kalamanta Olive as the appetizer. It is nothing so salad. I mean, I was expecting more greens. The prawns were seated in a bowl of creamy tomato gravy. There were quite a lot of prawns, about eight, I didn’t count, it was my estimate.

For Mains, we ordered a pasta and a Chicken Stew. The Pastas, was Pasta of Bay Prawns, Parma, Roasted Jalapeno and Capsicum pair with Light Cream Sauce. The pasta was very delicious. The pasta, of course is Al Dente. The cream sauce paired of very well with the pasta and the parma. It was a light but flavourful dish. While the Chicken Stew with Button Mushrooms, Potatoes serve with Garlic Bread, compared with the pasta, was not as great. The stew soup based was sourish, pretty appetizing. What I like about this dish is not the chicken but the garlic bread. There were freshly chopped garlic on the bread.

Every meal, I would love to end off with a dessert. This time, no exception as well. We shared the Classic Tiramisu. The Tiramisu was fine. The mascarpone cheese cream was flavourful and the sponge cake was soaked with enough of coffee and alcohol. The but is the amount of mascarpone cheese cream versus the sponge was not of the perfect balance. There were too much of mascarpone cheeese cream in it.

Our thoughts about Waterloo Times. A nice cosy little Italian Restaurant with pretty good food, especially the pasta. The service was good as well. It was just that there isn’t any “Wow” in the entire experience. Everything was just about good; good food, good service. That’s about it.
