Traditional Chinese Pastry and Cake Shop Charm

The traditional chinese pastry and cakes are loosing its charm with the Gen Y and also with the Millennium. With this trend going strong, soon all the traditional chinese pastry will eventually extinct. One after another Traditional Chinese Pastry and Cakes Shop has permanently closes its door.

The Traditional Chinese Pastry and Cakes when compared to its “peers”, the french and ‘western’ pastry and cakes, is not as attractive. The image of the Traditional Chinese Pastry and Cakes is boring, no surprises, no change. Most of the Traditional Chinese Pastry and Cakes are not as colourful. They are mainly brown or yellow, not aesthetic. As for these Traditional Chinese Pastry and Cakes shops, they are not as cool as the cafe and bakery.

Fortunately, there are still a few of the Traditional Chinese Pastry and Cakes shop exist in Chinatown. And thanks to Breadtalk who bought over a Traditional Chinese Pastry and Cakes, saving it from extinction. Lau Chong Kee (刘壮记) is one of the few surviving Traditional Chinese Pastry and Cake shop in Chinatown.

There are two other famous Traditional Chinese Pastry and Cakes in Chinatown area. One of them is Tai Chong Kok (大中国). Tai Chong Kok has since renovated. The shop has a modern look now. With this look, they should be able to attract more tourists and hopefully the younger generations.

Tai Chong Kok is extremely famous with the Cantonese old folks in Singapore for the mooncake (月饼) and nianguo (年糕). Mooncake is eaten on Mid-autumn festival (aka Mooncake festival), usually around September, while the nianguo is eaten during the Lunar New Year, late January, early February. It sells a range of other pastries and cakes daily.

The other is Tai Thong Cake Shop (大同饼家). My family loves a few items that are selling in Tai Thong. Every now and then my mom will buy them from Tai Thong Cake Shop. The pastries and cakes are on the sweeter side, nonetheless, we still enjoy them. Tai Thong Cake Shop is also famous for its mooncake. You might have to queue for them over the weekend during the mooncake festival.

Tong Heng (东兴精制饼食) is famous for its egg tart. It is simply delicious. The pastry is flaky. As usual, it is on the sweeter end. Tong Heng sells many other yummy pastries like the wife cake.

If you like Beh Teh Saw, you can find it at Tan Hock Seng Cake Shop (陈福成) at Amoy Street. It is also one of the existing Traditional Chinese Pastry Shop left in Singapore.

In my view, these Traditional Chinese Pastry and Cakes shop should start re-vamping giving a more modern, up-to-date image. They need to be more creative and innovative with the products, giving a twist to the Traditional Chinese Pastry and this will attract more people, especially the generations of tomorrow. Another suggestion is to bake some pastry and cakes that are healthier and less sweet. I encourage everyone who read this blog to patronise the Traditional Chinese Pastry and cultivate a love for the Tradition Chinese Pastry and Cakes.
